Introduction to Ayurveda:  Taming the Fall Wind

A basic introduction to the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with a focus on yoga and self care techniques to reduce the seasonal energy of VATA, which shows up as anxiety, insomnia, worry, ungroundedness and a tight, dry body

We all have at least some of the VATA dosha - Vata (in Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga) is the energy that governs movement.  It is light, subtle, dry and cold...  It gives us creativity, a quick mind, freshness, excitement, vibrancy and connection to spirit.

In excess, VATA brings:

* Anxiety, Worry and Fear
* Dry skin and Coldness
* A feeling of not being settled; restlessness
* Insomnia
* Spaciness and being easily distracted
* Nervous system conditions
* Digestive distress
* Frequently depleted and exhausted


We also live in a SOCIETY OF EXCESSIVE VATA:  Fear, technology and its virtual reality, focus on the mental body, excessive travel and commuting, excessive communication, global community (news), disconect from the earth and our food and too little local community connection and support.  These all increase Vata. Those of us with a tendency toward vata will feel these effects quicker.  And in Ayurveda they say "Always mind Vata" -  excessive vata can lead to excessive pitta (firey, irritatble, inflamation) and excessive kapha (congestion, mucus, lethargy).


So join us!!  We will explore:

* Sweet, soft, cozy, nurturing yoga postures
* Breathing techniques (pranayama) 
* Simple, relaxing mindfulness and meditation approaches
* Self care of the body (self oil massage and essential oils)
* Grounding foods and relaxing approaches to food
* Centering environments and activities in your daily life

No experience necessary - a very simple, calming practice.  Lots of freedom to move around and modify (vata does not like to be contained!)

Weekly Sunday Yoga Class


Begin your week from a place of peace...  

A basic weekly yoga class, designed to be affordable. Each series will build from one class to the next and will reflect the season, however each class will be easy enough to drop in to and as always will encourage you to move according to what your body needs on any given day.   We will stretch, strengthen, breathe, relax, explore mindfulness and generally come back home to our bodies in the here and now.  The class is inspired by the "Kripalu Yoga" style, which encourages you to discover your own yoga:  Find subtle movement within a pose, move based on your intuition, let the practice follow you off the mat into daily life, bring the practice back to your heart as you explore the depths of who you are.  All levels of experience welcome.  See below for the theme of each series as inspired by ayurveda's respect of the seasons.

Class Themes run as follows:  
September and October (8 classes):  Send Down Roots - as we come off of the chaos of hot summer it is time to re-center through structure and routine as we prepare for the time of Vata (wind, cold, ungroundedness, anxiety, worry, scattered-ness) that comes with the fall months.  We'll ground, center, encourage downward energy flow and explore home practice routines.  

November and December (7 classes - last class 12/16):  Heart Strengthening - we will continue to nurture our roots as we are deep in Vata season and begin to stoke the light at our hearts as we enter the darkest time of the year.  We will nurture and refill our internal "well" or "bucket" first with nourishing and deep stretching poses to encourage lubrication of joints and energy flow and then let it spill out to the world.  

January and February (8 classes):  Energy and Breath Awareness - as the season sends us deeper into ourselves, we explore breath work (pranayama) and simple energy tools to access the more subtle layers of our being.  Throughout our postures we will dive in deeper, hold poses longer, move slower and explore "Meditation in Motion".  

March and April (8 classes - no class on Easter Sunday):  Stoke the Fire and Cleanse - we will move and get the cobwebs out!  Poses and breathwork to help the digestive system, lubricate the joints, get us breathing into the deepest parts of our lungs, awaken our muscles and clear out our brains.

Each drop-in class:  $10

Valentine's Couples Yoga

  


Reconnect by moving, relaxing and having fun together!

A two hour partner yoga workshop to share the fun and "union" of yoga with a significant other.  


Settle into the silence and rhythms of your sweetheart and learn a little about how they "tick".  We will meditate, breathe, connect and move with our partners.  We will explore partner yoga poses, simple couples massage, deep stretches aided by another person and guided meditation.  Tune in to the breath and energy of your partner, and settle more deeply into your own being as you deeply relax with another in your space, all while having a little fun.

Try out yoga, meditation and mindfulness in a comfortable environment!  We'll lay it all out on the table and offer plenty of time for questions.  Casual, fun, educational.  Yoga is so much more amazing than just stretching the physical body.  Experiment with deeper presence and awareness in your daily life.  Learn about the roots of yoga and find safe ways to do the poses for your specific body (this isn't about being good or bad at yoga - each body needs a unique approach).  We will look at several poses in depth and try out many variations that might work better for you.

A yoga & mindfulness workshop

Relax into the support of community as we delve into inquiry, reconnect with Self and compassionately melt into what's blocking us... We will explore chakras, yoga philosophy, body alignment in all we do (sitting at a desk, carrying a baby...) mindfulness, relaxation and breathing tools to re-invent ourselves from the inside out.

We will each take time to create a SPECIFIC, individualized plan for ourselves that will bring more health, balance, self care, silence, power, etc. into our lives.  For example, you might choose to lie on the floor and breathe for 10 minutes each morning, or find a fun adventure to do each day, or look in the mirror each morning to change your self-perception.  It can really be anything you want.  It might be as simple and nurturing as 3 slow breaths before eating each meal.  Many ideas and formats will be suggested, but the final product is yours.   

Yoga practice, Guided meditation and tools for creating your own meditation practice, writing prompts, Meditation in Motion, mindfulness tools, poses and energy healing for each chakra, individualized poses for your own movement practice, inspiration and discussion to address those nagging problems in your daily life.

Through a guided meditation we will send this intention to the universe, embed the feeling we crave from the Sankalpa into our very DNA, and take flight!

Afraid you wouldn't stick to it?  That's part of the beauty of yoga!  When you come up against yourself getting in the way, such as setting a plan in place that wasn't actually your words ("I should...") or the parts of you that are afraid of happiness, health and success... then we get to dive into these places to learn, heal and grow.

Chakra Meditation Workshop

 Meditation as a joyful practice of healing and peace.  Discover your energetic body and create new freedom in your life through the 7 energy centers in the body.  

This workshop will explore the 7 chakras - the centers in the body where energy feeds the physical body.  Each chakra has a unique "flavor" combining physical, emotional and energetic qualities.  Through listening to each chakra and shifting the energy, we can actively create our reality!  Learn to feel and listen to your energetic and intuitive self, create boundaries with your world, discover the ways you perpetuate your unhealthy stories and more.

Yoga for Bicycling

 Bring the strength and balance of yoga alignment to your bike riding!   


Shoulders, wrists or neck hurt after riding?

Want a stronger core and more power while you ride?

Want to enjoy the ride more?


Then come join us as we learn to incorporate yoga postures into our "posture" on the bike!  We will also practice simple mindfulness techniques to let the ride become a living meditation and explore yoga stretches and strengthening poses off the bike that can support you better on the bike.

Cyclists, Mountain Bikers, Commuters, Leisure riders welcome and encouraged!  No previous yoga or bicycling experience necessary!
